• “Colour Disrobed Itself from the Body”: the Racialized Aesthetics of Liberation in Michael Ondaatje’s In the Skin of a Lion (p. 15 - 29) Show/hide Abstract

  • In Michael Ondaatje’s novel In the Skin of a Lion, striking descriptions of potentially lethal forms of manual labour both aestheticize and commemorate the suffering of ethnic minority workers in early twentieth-century Toronto. Congruent with Herbert Marcuse’s theory of the emancipatory power of sensuousness, the novel attempts to redeem the exploited workers through the sensate representation of their labour. Its patterns of imagery, however, tie personal and economic liberation to whiteness and ultimately signify that the verticality of Canada’s ‘multicultural mosaic’ will not be dissolved as easily for non-white people as it has been for those of European descent.
    
    Dans le roman In the Skin of a Lion de Michael Ondaatje, la description frappante de formes de travail manuel potentiellement mortelles esthétise et rappelle à la fois la souffrance des ouvriers ethniques minoritaires dans le Toronto du début du vingtième siècle. Cohérent avec la théorie d’Herbert Marcuse sur le pouvoir émancipatoire de la sensualité, le roman essaie de racheter les ouvriers exploités à travers la représentation sensuelle de leurs travaux. • “Ambivalence at the site of authority": Desire and Difference in Funny Boy (p. 31 - 46) Show/hide Abstract

  • New nations, in throwing off the vestiges of colonialism, often reference conservative ideas about masculinity and heterosexuality that might result in a strong and procreative country. Arjie, Selvadurai’s protagonist, comes to embody the tensions in these (post) postcolonial struggles. This essay examines the question as to whether Arjie, in any comprehensive sense, queers what the Sri Lankan majority might conceptualize as viable nationhood, especially as it, though disturbed, carries on hybridizing its former colonizer’s concepts of Western congruity and coherence, all of which are underscored by the imperatives of heteronormative masculinity. I argue that Ajie’s engagement with transgressive difference—that is, his gender and sexual “disobedience”—is mostly congruent with an expression of male prerogatives that can deliver him a measure of personal power.
    
    Les nouveaux états, en rejetant les vestiges du colonialisme, font souvent référence aux idées conservatrices de la masculinité et de l’hétérosexualité qui peuvent construire un pays fort et fécond. Arjie, le protagoniste du roman de Selvadurai, représente ces tensions dans la lutte (post)coloniale. Cet article examine la question de savoir si Arjie, dans un sens large, homosexualise ce que la majorité sri lankaise peut conceptualiser comme nation viable, surtout pendant qu’elle continue l’hybridation des concepts de congruence et cohérence de l’Occident qui viennent de son ancien colonisateur. Toutes ces idées sont soulignées par les impératifs de la masculinité hétéronormative. • History, Memory, Home: An Exchange with M.G. Vassanji (p. 49 - 61) Show/hide Abstract

  • This article surveys critical response to A Fine Balance in both Canada and India. Indian critics have hailed the humanitarian qualities of the book, even while questioning its accuracy. Some postcolonial critics have suggested that A Fine Balance is a universalizing work, one that ignores specific political contexts in favour of emotional appeal. But to student readers, the novel’s emotional appeal is what matters, for it enables them to imagine the novel’s protagonists as people like themselves. Such a response may have elements of naïve universalism, but it is the necessary first step to compassion and respect.
    
    Cet article résume la réception critique de A Fine Balance tant au Canada qu’en Inde. Les critiques indiens ont salué les qualités humanitaires du livre, tout en s’interrogeant sur son exactitude. Certains critiques postcoloniaux ont suggéré que le livre est une oeuvre qui universalise, qui privilégie les émotions en faisant abstraction des contextes politiques spécifiques. Pour les lecteurs étudiants, l’aspect émotionnel du roman est ce qui compte, parce que cela les aide à s’identifier aux protagonistes. Même si cette réaction d’identification démontre un universalisme naïf, elle est la première étape vers la compassion et le respect.

• Collaborative Auto/biography and Aboriginal “Enfranchisement” in Occupied Canada (p. 63 - 78) Show/hide Abstract

  • This paper examines the collaborative dynamics of Occupied Canada: a young white man discovers his unsuspected past, reading for the ways in which the autobiographical subject is articulated in relation to a variety of literary, legal and bureaucratic discourses. In its adaptation of the conventions of autobiography and historiography, and its evocation of the traditions of collaborative ethnography, Occupied Canada, written by Native activist Robert Calihoo and journalist Robert Hunter, contributes to what Daiva Stasiulis describes as “the jostling for position and influence of diverse and competing paradigms or imaginaries of citizenship” that characterizes contemporary Canada. More particularly, Occupied Canada’s collaborative narration of Calihoo’s life story raises doubts about autobiography’s generic fiction of a “complete and responsible” self-articulating subject (Lejeune) and its mirror image, modern liberal democracy’s legal fiction of the enfranchised citizen, by representing the inconsistent relationships between and incompatible operations of Aboriginal and national citizenships. Yet this narrative also risks collaboration with these dominant fictions in order to mobilize their literary and political power; Occupied Canada stakes a claim to the auto/biographical subject position in order to assert the privileges of citizenship and to identify its complex and incoherent relation to Aboriginal people.
    
    Cet article explore la dynamique collaborative de Occupied Canada : a young white man discovers his unsuspected past, en interprétant la manière dont le sujet autobiographique du livre est articulé par rapport à une variété de discours littéraires, juridiques et bureaucratiques. Dans son adaptation des conventions de l’autobiographie et de l’historiographie, et son évocation des traditions de l’ethnographie collaborative, Occupied Canada, écrit par l’activiste aborigène Robert Calihoo et le journaliste Robert Hunter, contribue à ce que Davia Stasiulis décrit comme « la bousculade pour la position et l’influence de divers paradigmes de la citoyenneté en compétition » qui caractérise le Canada contemporain. • Teaching Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance: Two Cheers for Universalism? (p. 180 - 187) Show/hide Abstract

  • This article surveys critical response to A Fine Balance in both Canada and India. Indian critics have hailed the humanitarian qualities of the book, even while questioning its accuracy. Some postcolonial critics have suggested that A Fine Balance is a universalizing work, one that ignores specific political contexts in favour of emotional appeal. But to student readers, the novel’s emotional appeal is what matters, for it enables them to imagine the novel’s protagonists as people like themselves. Such a response may have elements of naïve universalism, but it is the necessary first step to compassion and respect.
