In her poem "Snow," Margaret Avison observes that "The optic heart must venture: a jailbreak / And re-creation" to rediscover one's terrain. These three collections chart travels of rediscovery through town and country, through landscape and mindscape. In Jailbreaks, ninety-nine poems forward ironic perceptions focused largely but not entirely on night, winter, and death, with accents of anxiety and psychic rupture.
